New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson hasn’t been thrilled with his lack of targets and the team’s on-field struggles.
In at least one of those concerns, the organization agrees with him.
Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich acknowledged there was more that the team could do to manufacture plays to better utilize the former Offensive Rookie of the Year.
“Yeah, at the end of the day, we got to find ways to get Garrett (Wilson) the ball more often,” Ulbrich stated. “He’s one of the best players on our team, if not one of the best players in this league, especially at his position, so the progression for a lot of different reasons from a coverage standpoint took him off Garrett, but at the same time, we got to find ways to get him the ball, for sure.”
Wilson was targeted just seven times in Sunday’s 19-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. After the game, he voiced his ever-growing frustration in being unable to help change New York’s current losing stride.
“I’d like to be involved, love to make an impact on the game, but people see it differently,” Wilson said. “That’s out of my control.”
New York’s current regime appears to be at an impasse with much of its young core. Veteran wide receiver Davante Adams has almost doubled Wilson’s targets in the last two games despite the team going 1-1 in those games.
Fans and analysts can only predict what will happen moving forward, but we might argue that further push from Wilson can only make things worse for the team as they near the conclusion of the 2024 season.
At least Ulbrich understands that the team needs to get the ball more at this point.
