The New York Mets are the favorites to sign free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso this winter. Alonso is projected to sign a $152 million deal, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
But what if Alonso goes elsewhere? What other teams would make sense to steal the superstar slugger from New York?
After Mike Puma of the New York Post listed a handful of additional Alonso suitors, FanSided’s Zachary Rotman broke them down in order of who would be the most likely to pursue and land the first baseman. The Los Angeles Angels snuck on the list as a potential suitor, though Rotman doesn’t believe it’s the most likely option.
“They might trick themselves into signing Alonso with the thought that they’d be good enough to compete, but would Alonso seriously consider them? Money matters, and if the Angels offer him way more than any other team then of course he’d consider them,” Rotman wrote. “However, there’s no reason why Alonso would consider the Angels’ money aside, and are we even sure that the Angels want Alonso?”
The Angels are likely not a serious suitor for Alonso. For this to actually come to fruition, Los Angeles would need to overpay for the star slugger severely.
