The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly prioritizing adding a center ahead of the NHL trade deadline, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. Speaking on The FAN 590, the insider confirmed Toronto’s search for forward depth but specified that the priority is someone with terms versus adding a rental player.
If Friedman is correct and the Leafs want a player with years remaining on his contract, a select few players come to mind. Perhaps none are more significant than Mika Zibanejad, who, interestingly, has been rumored as a name the New York Rangers are willing to trade in the right deal.
The obvious issue is the Leafs’ lack of cap space. With only $660,000 to work with and no 2025 first-round pick to offer, the Leafs will be challenged to add someone of Zibanejad’s caliber, who also carries an $8.5 million cap hit.
Would Mika Zibanejad Waive No-Move for Maple Leafs?
Nick Alberga of Leafs Nation writes, “It would be a complicated deal to put together, but at the very least, I think the Leafs should inquire on Mika Zibanejad’s availability.” He adds that his sources claim Zibanejad would be willing to waive his no-movement clause in the right deal.
Alberga writes that the Rangers might be looking to make a shocking move and wake the team. He explains:
“…Zibanejad would tick a lot of boxes for Craig Berube and company up the middle. He’s big, he’s dynamic, he shoots right, and maybe most notably, he’s not a ghost in the postseason. In 74 career playoff games, the Swede has tallied 63 points.”
While landing Zibanejad mid-season could be complicated, the Leafs’ need for depth at center may push them to explore bold moves. This would certainly qualify.
