The Parramatta Eels have officially appointed Jason Ryles as their head coach for the 2025 NRL season, entrusting him with a four-year contract to lead the team into a new era.
Ryles, who has built a commendable coaching resume, previously served as an assistant coach with the Melbourne Storm, where he contributed to the team’s strategic development and on-field success.
His coaching journey also includes valuable experience with the England rugby union team and the Sydney Roosters, showcasing his versatility and tactical acumen across both rugby codes.
The decision to bring Ryles on board follows a challenging period for the Eels, who concluded the 2024 season in 15th place.
This performance prompted the club to part ways with long-serving coach Brad Arthur in May 2024, leading to a comprehensive search for a successor capable of revitalizing the team’s prospects.
Eels Chairman Sean McElduff expressed confidence in Ryles’ appointment, stating, “Jason brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record from his time with successful clubs. We believe he is the right person to lead our team towards future premierships.”
Ryles himself conveyed enthusiasm about his new role, commenting, “Joining the Eels is a tremendous opportunity. The club has a rich history and a passionate fan base. I’m eager to work with the playing group and contribute to building a successful future.”
In preparation for the upcoming season, Ryles has begun assembling his coaching staff. Notably, Nathan Brown, Scott Wisemantel, Sam Moa, and Nathan Cayless have been confirmed as assistant coaches, each bringing a unique set of skills and experience to support the team’s development.
The Eels are also undergoing significant roster changes under Ryles’ leadership. Former captain Clint Gutherson has departed, signing a three-year deal with the St George Illawarra Dragons.
Additionally, key players such as Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Maika Sivo have exited, signaling a transformative phase for the club.
Looking ahead, the Eels are set to commence their 2025 campaign with a challenging fixture against the Melbourne Storm, Ryles’ former club. This opening match is anticipated to be a significant test for the new coaching regime and the restructured team.
