When the transfer portal officially opened up in college football, the Oklahoma Sooners got a very slow start. And, they started to lose players left and right, specifically the wide receiver position. And, the team just wasn’t targeting one of the main positions they needed the most — the tight end position.
But, somehow after they lost their defensive coordinator and assistant general manager, the portal started to pick up some steam. And after getting some really, really good players through the portal, they have now gotten a guy who will fit Arbuckle’s system.
Oklahoma Sooners add another tight end through the transfer portal
John Locke has been a tight end for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, participating in 26 games throughout his college tenure. On Wednesday, the Sooners were able to get him in the portal, gaining a third tight end this cycle. But, there are rumors and reports that he is a preferred walk-on, and I’m not sure at the moment how true that is.
As a three-star recruit from the class of 2022, he hasn’t made a significant offensive impact, managing only three catches for six yards and one touchdown. But, his blocking ability in the run game, and having the ability to get to that second left on pull plays as even a full back sometimes, is what will help the most.
However, his role on special teams has been more substantial, with 216 snaps recorded by Pro Football Focus. With his size – 6’4″ and 241 pounds – Locke has the physical tools to potentially thrive in Oklahoma’s football program, where he still has two years of eligibility remaining.
