The Minnesota Vikings have added another piece to their roster, agreeing to terms with wide receiver Tim Jones as they continue to build depth at the position. The announcement came shortly after the team’s earlier signing of cornerback Jeff Okudah on Tuesday morning. Specific details of Jones’ contract were not immediately disclosed.
Jones entered the NFL in 2021 as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Mississippi, signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He spent his rookie year on the Jaguars’ practice squad but eventually worked his way onto the active roster. Over the past three seasons, Jones played in all 51 regular-season games for Jacksonville, earning three starts during that stretch.
While his production as a receiver has been limited, totaling just 17 catches for 154 yards and no touchdowns, Jones’ primary value comes on special teams. Last season, he played in 68% of the Jaguars’ special teams snaps, proving to be a consistent contributor in that role. He also handled two kick returns for a combined 43 yards.
For the Vikings, this move is clearly aimed at strengthening their special teams unit and adding depth to the wide receiver room heading into training camp. Jones will likely have the opportunity to compete for a roster spot this summer, but his clearest path to making the team will come through his special teams play.
Though not expected to be a major factor in the passing game, Jones brings experience and reliability in special teams coverage and return duties. His addition provides the Vikings with more flexibility and insurance as they round out their roster ahead of the upcoming season.
If Jones can stand out in camp and preseason action, he could carve out a role similar to what he held in Jacksonville — as a dependable special teams player with occasional snaps on offense. For now, it’s a solid depth move by Minnesota as they continue shaping their squad.
