Monday night’s practice for the Detroit Lions was headlined by three notable injuries. Rookie cornerbacks Terrion Arnold (upper body) and Ennis Rakestraw (ankle) and running back Jahmyr Gibbs (leg). A subsequent report says it’s a hamstring injury for Gibbs, and on Tuesday there is news about Arnold.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Arnold suffered a pectoral injury on Monday night, but he is not expected to miss any time in the regular season.
Per reporters who were on-site Monday night, Arnold was going against wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown in a 1-on-1 rep early in the practice session. After he broke up the pass, the first-round rookie corner landed hard on his side. According to Nolan Bianchi of the Detroit News, Arnold was holding his right arm away from his body as he was walking off the field. He was evaluated by trainers, and eventually left for the locker room.
Lions avoid potential disaster with promising Terrion Arnold injury update
Exactly how much time Arnold will miss is still unclear, but it’s all but certain he’s out for the rest of training camp and the preseason (not that he would’ve played a ton in the last two preseason games anyway). The idea he won’t any miss regular season games points to him not having a torn pectoral like teammate Emmanuel Moseley, who is out indefinitely. So that’s great news.
Head coach Dan Campbell is scheduled to join the Costa and Jensen show on 97.1 The Ticket Wednesday morning (h/t to Pride of Detroit), so it’s possible he’ll have some sort of updates on Gibbs, Arnold and Rakestraw.
Arnold is the projected starting outside cornerback for the Lions opposite Carlton Davis, confirmed by the first-team reps he’s been getting there since training camp started. Missed practice time/however many preseason game snaps between now and the start of the season isn’t ideal, but it’s definitely better than a major injury that would cost Arnold meaningful games.
