Blunt Leeds United PSR verdict given after Archie Gray’s £40m transfer to Tottenham

Leeds United’s desire to include the sale of Archie Gray in their accounts for the 2023/24 season suggests the club were “miles short” off meeting Profitability and Sustainability (PSR) regulations, football finance expert Stefan Borson has claimed. Academy graduate Gray sealed a £40m switch to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week, penning a six-year contract with the Premier League club.

United were thought to be under pressure to report the Gray deal in last year’s accounts, for which the deadline passed on June 30 to cover the 23/24 PSR period, to ensure they stayed within the financial rules. Although the Gray transfer concluded on July 2, it is believed the club were able to provide paperwork to the relevant authorities – the Premier League and English Football League – to allow them to backdate the transfer to the 2023/24 accounting period.
