Malachi Moreno is a Wildcat

Syndication: The Courier-Journal

Yesterday was an eventful day for the Kentucky Wildcats and Mark Pope. The new UK head coach has landed his first commitment in the 2025 class, and what makes it even better is that it comes from Georgetown native Malachi Moreno.

Moreno, arguably the No. 1 center and the best recruit from Kentucky, chose the Cats over Indiana, Arkansas, Ohio State, Notre Dame, North Carolina, and Iowa.

Not only is Moreno staying home for college, but he also decided to pass on Prep school for his final season to finish his high school career at Great Crossing.

When talking to Jack Pilgrim of KSR, Moreno’s response couldn’t have been worded much better;

“I got everything I need just being here,” Moreno told Pilgrim. “This is my home. I grew up here my whole life. It didn’t feel right leaving for one year.“

Now, we dove into all of the details of his commitment yesterday as the BBN rejoiced in a Cody Fueger “BOOM” tweet, but this recruiting win helps give a quick answer to a major question that has surrounded Coach Pope and his staff since arriving in Lexington: Can they land top recruits?

We officially have an answer, and it appears that they could be on the cusp of landing another one.

Things have started to shift in the recruitment of five-star guard Jasper Johnson over the last few days, and what was once thought to be a UNC and Alabama battle seems to now be the Cats vs. the Tide.

Let’s just say if Pope can pull off that recruiting upset, then the book is closed on that recruiting question. But first, we are going to take another day to celebrate Malachi Moreno’s commitment.

Go Cats!
