The world No. 3 surprisingly lost in Cincinnati’s opening round but he’s motivated to get back to his best in the US Open.

Carlos Alcaraz had to deal with one of the toughest moments of his career in the Cincinnati Open. The Spaniard was looking to lift the trophy in the Ohio Masters 1000 tournament but was defeated in the opening round against all odds.

Gael Monfils was the better man on the court and while Alcaraz struggled to find his game, the Frenchman took advantage of his powerful serve and drive to close the match. After breaking his racket in desperation, the Murcia great apologized for the incident and admitted he’s just focused on going well in the US Open.

The Spanish maestro won the first of his four majors in New York, so he will be motivated to repeat his 2022 experience, although the current champion, Novak Djokovic, will try to become a 25-time Grand Slam tournament champion.

What feat could Carlos Alcaraz accomplish at the US Open?

At 21, Carlitos has already made history a few times, and a few big accomplishments are waiting for him, one of them at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park facilities.

Juan Carlos Ferrero’s player is recording one of the best seasons for any tennis player in recent history. He won the French Open and Wimbledon, and clinched silver in a tight final game against Djokovic at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Despite his frustration for not winning the gold medal in the French capital, Alcaraz could make history at the US Open and achieve something Roger Federer and Djokovic couldn’t in their careers. He could become the third player in the Open Era to win the French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open in the same calendar year, and the first to achieve that feat since Rafa Nadal did it in 2010.

Last year, Alcaraz was beaten in New York by an in-form Daniil Medvedev, who had already won the tournament in 2021 by getting the better of Djokovic in straight sets. He will hope to avenge that loss and go all the way to win his fifth major in what would be the icing on the cake for him.
