Newcastle United failed to offload some of their fringe players during the summer transfer window but lost two exciting players to comply with PSR rules.
The Magpies wanted to get rid of Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson, Matt Targett, Jacob Murphy and Martin Dubravka in the summer, but they all still remain at St James’ Park.
Some are ageing, while others are underperforming, and some are on lucrative contracts. That’s why other clubs were not interested in signing them.
According to Chris Waugh of The Athletic, the Magpies may have to “seriously consider” selling Sean Longstaff in January.
The 26-year-old midfielder has less than a year left on his deal, and there is no indication that he will be getting a contract extension. He is a homegrown player, and therefore, any money received from his sale will be seen as a profit.
Newcastle will definitely not want to be in a situation to lose him for free, and hence, cashing in on him in January makes a lot of sense.
Selling Sean Longstaff could help Newcastle United
Longstaff has progressed through the youth ranks at Newcastle and has made 189 appearances in all competitions, scoring 16 goals.
This season, he has made four starts in the Premier League, and a further two appearances have come from the bench.
The defensive midfielder manages 1.8 tackles and manages 85.6% passing accuracy in the Premier League.
While he remains an important member of the side, the Magpies should consider the business aspect and offload him for a decent transfer fee.
Joe Willock is also another bankable asset, but Newcastle are under no pressure to sell him now, as he has more than two and a half years left on his contract.
Newcastle have a decent stock of players in midfield, and losing Longstaff will not hamper the squad badly.
