ATP Rankings update: Jannik Sinner maintains lead over Novak Djokovic despite losing 400 points; Lorenzo Sonego’s heroics add glory to Italian tennis

Jannik Sinner has extended his run as the World No. 1 ahead of the US Open in the latest ATP player rankings. The Italian star became the highest-ranked men’s player in the world during the French Open in June and is on course to end the year as the World No. 1.

Sinner has held his place as the World No.1 despite losing all his points from the Indian Wells Masters in March. The Italian has been involved in a doping controversy and has since been cleared. However, his prize money and ranking points from the Indian Wells have been taken away. Sinner won the Cincinnati Masters last week to add more points to his kitty and sits comfortably as the World No. 1 at 9,360 points.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic’s decision to skip the Cincinnati Masters has cost him 1000 points. The Serbian was the defending champion at the event but opted to rest after his gold medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024. The Serbian is currently ranked second in the world with 7,460 points and will start his US Open title defense as the second seed.

The French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz finds himself third in the latest ATP player rankings. The Spaniard had the chance to overtake Djokovic at the Cincinnati Masters, but his second-round exit meant that the 20-year-old stays in his position as the World No. 3. Alcaraz is currently at 7,360 points, just 100 behind Novak Djokovic.

Alexander Zverev (7,035 points) and Daniil Medvedev (6,275 points) complete the top 5 in the latest ATP rankings.

Among other popular players, Stefanos Tsitsipas finds himself as World No. 11 with 3,425 points while Taylor Fritz is the highest-ranked American player at World No. 12 (3,120 points) followed by Ben Shelton in 13th place (3,110 points) and Tommy Paul in 14th place (2,985 points)

Lorenzo Sonego breaks into top 50 in latest ATP rankings to continue Italian dominance of men’s tennis

Lorenzo Sonego has broken into the top 50 of the world rankings after his title win at the Winston-Salem ATP 250. The Italian star won the tournament without dropping a single set and has subsequently jumped 10 places in the ATP rankings. The 29-year-old is currently ranked as the World No. 48 with 1,116 points.

Sonego’s 48th place in the world ranking means seven Italian men are among the top 50 in the ATP world rankings; Jannik Sinner, Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Arnaldi, Flavio Cobolli, Luciano Darderi, Matteo Berrettini, and Lorenzo Sonego all occupy a place in the top 50 of the men’s world rankings.

While Sinner leads the way as the World No. 1, Musetti is the second highest-ranked Italian in 18th place (2,255 points). The 22-year-old has been one of the most in-form players in the last few months, reaching the semi-final of the Wimbledon and the Olympics in Paris. The Italian hot-shot also reached the final of the Umag ATP 250, though he lost to Franciso Cerundolo in three sets.

Arnaldi (1,470 points) and Cobolli (1,418 points) are ranked as World No. 30 and 31 respectively. The Italian duo is followed by 22-year-old Darderi at No. 37 with 1,291 points.

Berrettini is placed at No. 44 in the latest ATP rankings as he continues his comeback from injuries. The 28-year-old won the Kitzbuhel ATP 250 without dropping a set, in his preparations for the US Open.
