The $200 million Alex Bregman sweepstakes appeared to be coming to an end earlier this week, but now the belief is that the star infielder won’t sign his contract for another week or so. The Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays are the five teams believed to remain in pursuit of the star third baseman. Houston seemed like a long shot after general manager Dana Brown made it seem as though Bregman was a goner, but things might have changed very quickly. Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently revealed a detail in the Bregman sweepstakes that could keep the door wide open on a deal with the Astros. “Free agent third baseman Alex Bregman still has no interest in a short-term contract and seeks a 6- or 7-year deal,” Nightengale wrote in a post to X/Twitter. The Astros are one of the only teams in the sweepstakes who seem likely to offer a deal worth six or seven years. The Cubs are reportedly willing to give the infielder a two- or three-year deal, which could spell bad news for Chicago if Nightengale’s report is accurate. Unless the Cubs become willing to give him a deal closer to the length he’s asking, they could be out of the running. The Red Sox and Blue Jays have the money to spend, so it’s impossible to rule them out of a long-term deal for Bregman. The Tigers have followed close and are rumored to be willing to spend quite a bit of money, potentially even six years’ worth of money, to bring the star to Detroit. Either way, Nightengale’s report should give Astros fans some hope that Bregman is coming home.
