Braves on the Hunt Atlanta Eyes Rivals Ace Starter in Blockbuster Deal.

Posted on March 17, 2025 by admin

The Atlanta Braves are reportedly in the market for a frontline starting pitcher, aiming to bolster their rotation ahead of the 2025 season. Recent reports have linked the Braves to multiple ace-level starters, signaling their intent to make a blockbuster trade.

Dylan Cease as a Primary Target

One of the most prominent names connected to Atlanta is Chicago White Sox ace Dylan Cease. The hard-throwing right-hander has been a popular trade target this offseason, with several teams showing interest. Cease, who finished as a Cy Young finalist in 2022, would immediately strengthen Atlanta’s rotation alongside Max Fried, Spencer Strider, and Charlie Morton.

A potential trade scenario involving Cease has been floated, where the Braves would send catcher Drake Baldwin and right-handed pitching prospect A.J. Smith-Shawver to Chicago in exchange for the ace. The White Sox are in a rebuilding phase and could benefit from adding young, controllable talent.

Interest in Sandy Alcantara

Another intriguing possibility for the Braves is Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara. Although Alcantara recently underwent Tommy John surgery and will likely miss the 2024 season, Atlanta could be considering a long-term investment in the 2022 National League Cy Young winner. Acquiring him now at a potentially discounted price could pay dividends when he returns in 2025.

Alcantara, known for his durability and elite sinker, would fit well in Atlanta’s rotation. However, given that the Marlins are a division rival, a deal could be difficult to negotiate. Miami might demand a hefty return, including top prospects or young MLB-ready players.

Other Potential Targets

Besides Cease and Alcantara, the Braves have also been linked to Minnesota Twins’ ace Pablo López. Reports indicate that Atlanta could pursue a trade for López, who has been a reliable top-of-the-rotation arm. His ability to generate strikeouts and limit walks makes him an attractive option for a team looking to deepen its rotation.

Braves’ Offseason Strategy

Atlanta’s front office has been aggressive in recent years, making significant trades and free-agent acquisitions to keep the team competitive. After winning the 2021 World Series, the Braves have focused on maintaining a dominant roster.

Adding an ace starter would solidify Atlanta’s rotation and increase their chances of another deep postseason run. Whether it’s Cease, Alcantara, López, or another elite arm, expect the Braves to remain active in trade discussions as they look to finalize their roster before Opening Day.
