Aaron Boone, the New York Yankees manager signed a two-year contract extension throughout the 2027 Major League Baseball season on February 20, just one day before Spring Training.
A former Yankee himself, Boone has been a likeable manager since 2018. He thinks about his players on and off the field by how he coaches and is not afraid to stand up for his players and get ejected by the umpire. In 2022 and 2023, Boone led Major League Baseball in having the most ejections by a manager.
Andrew Lynch, a senior finance and sales major commented on what makes Boone a great manager.
“Boone does a great job keeping the team together and communicates well with the players,” Lynch said. “He stays calm during tough times, which helps everyone stay focused. The players trust him because he supports them and has their backs when it matters.”
During Boone’s time with the Yankees, he’s had a lot of success. For starters, he set the major league record of making the postseason during the first five years as manager. He sent the Yankees to the postseason six out of seven times and ranked seventh on the Yankees all time list with the most wins by a manager.
While Boone has done a great job as manager, the only thing he hasn’t accomplished in the last seven years is giving the Yankees their 28th World Series title. Last season, he won his first American League pennant as manager and brought the Yankees to their first World Series since 2009. He got close to helping the Yankees win their 28th World Series in 2024, but fell short to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the World Series.
During the offseason, the Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, and general manager, Brian Cashman began devising a plan to extend Boone’s contract because they’ve both been happy with his success. The contract needed to be extended just in time before Spring Training on February 21. After Boone signed the contract, they knew he would help the Yankees continue their path to their 28th World Series title.
Though many like Boone, his style of managing has had mixed reviews with Yankee fans. The Yankees finished the 2024 season winning the American League pennant and going to the World Series, which gives fans a reason to like him. However, most fans don’t like him because he hasn’t been able to win the World Series.
Joseph Marini, a senior finance major, commented on why Boone isn’t likeable by Yankee fans.
“People complain because Boone hasn’t won a World Series since he’s been here, but we could not have been closer last year,” Marini said. “If there was ever a time to fire Boone and not extend his contract, it was 2 years ago when we missed the playoffs. It’s hard to complain about extending a manager’s contract when he just was in the World Series this past season.”
Yankee fans expect to see Boone help the Yankees redeem themselves this season, and see him continue his support of the players and fans with actions like ejections.
Whether fans like him or hate him, Boone is here to stay as he helps the Yankees navigate their path for their 28th World Series title.
