New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman knows that making the World Series does not mean the job is done. But to tell him that the Yankees have not won the pennant in 15 years is also not accurate in his mind.
As the Yankees prepare to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series for New York‘s first appearance since 2009, MLB Network‘s Chris Russo asked the architect how it feels to be back. Cashman still has the Houston Astros on his mind — because of how they‘ve shaped the Yankees’ narrative.
“It means a lot,” Cashman said on High Heat. “And I hate the 15-year thing because it completely forgets and discounts that some other organizations cheated us when we were all the way in the end. You know, if you knew what was going on, I don’t think they would be advancing during that time thing, I think we would have been advancing. So I hate that 15-year thing because I don’t think it accurately reflects history. Regardless, we’re proud to be where we are now.”
The Yankees lost the AL Championship Series to the Astros in 2017 in seven games after Houston won Games 6 and 7 and every home game in the series. The Astros would then knock off the Dodgers in seven games to win the World Series, a place where many fans (and the Yankees) never believed they should have been in the first place.
