Detroit Lions Receive Bad News as Key Players Depart Amid Roster Shake up Ahead of 2025 Season

Posted on March 17, 2025 by admin

The Detroit Lions are experiencing a significant roster shake-up ahead of the 2025 NFL season, with several key players departing due to free agency, trades, and strategic restructuring. These moves indicate a shift in the team’s approach as they look to reshape their roster for the upcoming season.

Key Departures

Amon-Ra St. Brown Leaves Detroit

One of the biggest losses for the Lions is wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. St. Brown had been a crucial part of the offense, tallying 1,250 yards and 10 touchdowns in the 2024 season. His ability to create plays and provide a reliable target for quarterback Jared Goff made him a fan favorite. However, the Lions have opted not to extend him, possibly due to salary cap considerations and a desire to invest in other areas of the team.

Defensive Secondary Loses Key Players

The Lions’ defense also took a hit, particularly in the secondary. Cornerback Carlton Davis, acquired to solidify the defense, suffered a fractured jaw late in the 2024 season, and his future with the team remains uncertain. Additionally, veteran cornerback Kindle Vildor has signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, further weakening Detroit’s cornerback depth. These losses leave a glaring hole in the Lions’ defense, which will need to be addressed in free agency or the NFL Draft.

Release of Za’Darius Smith

Defensive lineman Za’Darius Smith, brought in from the Cleveland Browns in a mid-season trade, was released by the Lions on March 9, 2025. Smith had contributed to the pass rush but was let go as the Lions look to restructure their defensive line.

Additional Departures

The Lions have also parted ways with several other players, including wide receiver D.J. Chark, linebacker Alex Anzalone, and defensive lineman Michael Brockers. These moves indicate a broader effort to reset the team’s roster for a new direction.

What’s Next for the Lions?

With these departures, Detroit is expected to be active in free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft. Analysts suggest that the team may target an EDGE rusher, offensive linemen, and defensive backs to fill the gaps left by these exits. Fans will be watching closely to see how the Lions navigate these roster changes in their pursuit of a deep playoff run in 2025.
