Ex-Broncos Running Back Shares Candid Experience Under Sean Payton

Posted on March 27, 2025 by admin

Former Broncos RB Javonte Williams Reflects on Playing Under Sean Payton and His Move to Dallas

After an impressive 2024 season with a rookie quarterback leading the way, the Denver Broncos are charging into the new year with a revamped roster. The team made major free agency moves, bringing in top talents like tight end Evan Engram, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, safety Talanoa Hufanga, and defensive tackle D.J. Jones. However, as new faces arrive, some familiar ones have departed—including former starting running back Javonte Williams.

Williams, who played a key role in Denver’s backfield over the past few seasons, was initially expected to return. Both head coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton had expressed interest in re-signing him before free agency opened. However, instead of staying in Denver, Williams opted for a fresh start with the Dallas Cowboys, signing a one-year, $3.5 million deal.

Now settling into his new role in Dallas, the 24-year-old running back recently reflected on his experience with the Broncos and what he learned under Payton’s leadership.

“Playing for a coach like Payton teaches you to be gritty, strong, and tough,” Williams shared. “Those are things I’m bringing to the Cowboys as well. There will be ups and downs, but you gotta keep going. And I make plays—run the ball, catch the ball, however it may come.”

While his time in Denver has come to an end, Williams is determined to carry the resilience and toughness instilled in him under Payton into his next chapter with the Cowboys. As he looks ahead to the 2025 season, he’s eager to prove his value in Dallas and make a significant impact on the field.
