Ex-Edmonton Oilers power-play specialist announces retirement

A former Edmonton Oilers power-play specialist has officially hung up the skates after spending 11 seasons in the NHL.

Alex Chiasson announced his retirement from pro hockey at the age of 34 earlier today, marking the end of a 651-game career that included one Stanley Cup championship while a member of the 2017-18 Washington Capitals.

The NHLPA announced his retirement on social media.

Though he won a Stanley Cup in Washington, his best seasons in the NHL came as a member of the Oilers. Chiasson spent three seasons in the Alberta capital between 2018 and 2021, where he managed to score 42 goals and 78 points throughout 183 games with the Oilers.

His best season came in 2018-19 where he managed to put up 22 goals and 38 points in 78 games, which surpassed his previous career-high of 13 goals and 35 points that he recorded in 2013-14 with the Dallas Stars. He found particular success as a net-front presence on Edmonton’s power play.

Chiasson was initially drafted 38th overall by the Stars back in 2009 but only managed to play one full season in Texas before he was traded to the Ottawa Senators. He went on to play another two seasons in the Canadian capital but then started to bounce around. He played with the Calgary Flames and the Capitals before parlaying a PTO into a contract with the Oilers in 2018.

The power-forward would gain quite a reputation for being able to land a contract out of a PTO. He had done it with both the Capitals and Oilers, before finding similar success later in his career with both the Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings.
