A former Georgia Bulldogs standout surprisingly now finds himself as an NFL free agent. The ex-Georgia player earned the program’s Vince Dooley Most Valuable Player honor, was a finalist for the Rimington Trophy and named to the All-SEC second team during his tenure in Athens, Ga., from 2011 to 2014.
Despite these honors, the former Dawgs center was not selected in the 2025 NFL draft with some franchises concerned about his size. This did not stop the veteran from eventually becoming a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots.
Now, center David Andrews is looking for a new home as the Pats abruptly released the offensive lineman. Andrews was an eight-time captain with New England.
“News story: Patriots making a change at center, with plans to release franchise pillar and 8-time captain David Andrews today, per sources,” ESPN’s Mike Reiss detailed in an X message on Thursday.
“Andrews is recovering from shoulder surgery. If he decides to retire, the expectation is that the team would host a ceremony for him to honor his widespread contributions over the last decade.”
The good news is Andrews is sure to have plenty of suitors. Andrews started 121 games for the Patriots during his nine seasons with the franchise.
