‘Excuse me?’ – Lexi Thompson left reporter stunned in awkward Solheim Cup moment

Team USA star Lexi Thompson will hope to take better memories from the 2024 Solheim Cup after an unfortunate incident in 2023.

The superstar golfer recently announced plans to retire at the end of the year and her seventh Solheim Cup will be her last.

Only two of those appearances have resulted in victory, with Europe experiencing dominance over the past decade.

Thompson delivered three points out of four in 2023, but the event finished 14-14, meaning Europe retained the cup in dramatic fashion.

And the American will not want to be reminded of what happened on Friday.

After USA stormed into an emphatic lead on day one, Thompson threw away a vital half-point in the afternoon session.

Playing alongside Lilia Vu, the duo were tied with the European pair of Leona Maguire and Georgia Hall heading into the final hole.

Moments prior to Thompson’s third shot, Maguire had chipped in for a birdie four, with the American then required to hole her chip for a full point – or get up-and-down for a half.

However, the 2014 Chevron Championship winner’s attempt was disastrous.

She almost hit partner Vu and her caddie, with the ball eventually resting up at the bottom of the hill by the front of the green.

The shanked effort proved decisive as it gave Team Europe their first full point of the day – and ultimately sparked a comeback.

Speaking in the press conference following the match, Thompson was asked what went wrong for her chip and what her thought process was going into it.

But not in a mood to give an answer, she bluntly said: “I don’t need to comment on that.”

Taken aback, the reporter in question simply stated: “Excuse me?”

To which an agitated Thompson replied: “I don’t need to comment on the chip.

“It was a bad lie, and I did not hit a good chip, but it was pretty much impossible.”

America’s captain Stacy Lewis, who was sitting alongside Thompson, was left unimpressed by the question.

Muttering under her breath once Thompson had finished, she could be heard saying: “That’s a terrible question.”

Thompson and Lewis will now get a shot at redemption as both welcome Europe to Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia this week.

Lewis, who has stayed on as captain, picked Thompson as one of her three wildcards and hopes Team USA can give the golfer a fitting send off.

“Lexi has definitely changed women’s golf,” captain Lewis said.

“I actually got to play with her in her rookie year at Solheim in Colorado. I believe that was her first one.

“To see how far she’s come from there until now [is incredible]
