Gary Neville makes scathing assessment of Manchester United flops after Tottenham defeat

Posted on September 30, 2024 by admin

Speaking on Sky Sports via Daily Mirror after Sunday’s match between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, Gary Neville unleashed a rant on the players and manager, Erik ten Hag, branding the performance ‘disgusting’ while suggesting questions needed to be asked of all parties.

The Manchester United legend said, “It was an absolutely disgusting performance in that first half in effort, quality, everything you would want in a football team. There will be a lot of questions to answer for that group (of players) and the manager in the next week. I’ve been here at Man United enough over the past 10 to 12 years to know that a game and a result like this needs reversing rather quickly.”

Gary Neville continued, “The snowball starts to roll down that hill and it gathers apace. Erik ten Hag has got to stop it at source right now because this is a shocking day, a sobering day. I said just before the game that there can be no excuses. A mountain of cash has been spent and invested. The first half was absolutely woeful, as bad as it gets.”

“The pressure is going to get ramped up this week – it is going to be brutal. It has been a bad day for Ten Hag, really bad. It’s one of the worst performances I have seen under Ten Hag – and that is saying something. It is really bad.”

Manchester United produced their worst performance of the 2024/25 season thus far, losing 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening. The hosts were never in the equation to get anything from the game after being slow off the blocks. Brennan Johnson opened the scoring in the third minute, and the away side should have netted more goals in the first half.

Things went from bad to worse when Bruno Fernandes saw red after a “dangerous” tackle on James Maddison. Tottenham then eased to the 3-0 win in the second half, as Dejan Kulusevski doubled the lead just two minutes in before Dominic Solanke rounded up the victory midway through the period.

The result would have heaped the pressure on Erik ten Hag, considering recent reports have claimed that Manchester United could sack him by Christmas. It will be interesting to see if the Dutch tactician can turn things around and secure his job by guiding Manchester United to a winning run in the coming weeks.
