Jazz Chisholm Jr. Injury Update: Yankees’ new addition dodges UCL surgery for now, per report
The New York Yankees trade deadline acquisition, Jazz Chisholm Jr., was placed on a 10-day IL on Wednesday after suffering a sprain in his left elbow on Monday against the Chicago White Sox.
He was expected to have season-ending surgery; however, Jon Heyman of the New York Post confirmed on Friday that the Yankees’ infielder has avoided the UCL surgery and could resume his season as early as September.
“After the Yankees sought multiple opinions from doctors on their new third baseman’s UCL injury, rest and rehab has been recommended for Chisholm instead of surgery, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed on Friday. The club is hopeful Chisholm can play again this season, likely in September,” Greg Joyce of New York Post reported.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. solved the Yankees’ infield concerns, which bothered them all season. The Yankees acquired him from the Maimi Marlins in exchange for Triple-A catcher Agustin Ramírez and infielders Jared Serna and Abrahan Ramírez. Since his arrival, he has been great for the team.
Since joining the Bombers, he has a stat line of .316/.361/.702 and an OPS of 1.062, scoring 11 RBIs, 13 runs and seven home runs in 14 games.
Yankees manager feels optimistic after Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s latest injury update
After consulting with multiple doctors, Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been recommended rest and rehab, per Heyman. He underwent an MRI on Tuesday before finalizing the decision. Manager Aaron Boone was optimistic about his return.
“I can tell you Jazz is pretty encouraged by how he’s feeling,” manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday, per Greg Joyce of New York Post. “So hopefully that’s a good sign.”
Chisholm Jr. has been completely shut down from all sorts of field activities since Wednesday, while his injury break period looms uncertainly as the Yankees are closing their playoff participation.
As of Friday, they’re 72-50, tying with the Baltimore Orioles (72-50) for the AL East division lead.
