The game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday could be the last time star quarterback Aaron Rodgers will don a New York Jets uniform.
After weeks of ducking the question, Rodgers hinted at retirement in an interview with reporters on Wednesday, saying he has “a lot of gratitude for the last 20 years.”
But amid the possibility of Rodgers’ swan song and the end to another dismal campaign, the Jets are still set to make team history in the season finale against the Dolphins.
With the Jets set to field Greg Joseph, the team will use its fifth kicker this year, the most it has ever used in a season, as pointed out in a report from New York Post’s Brian Costello. He added that it’s the second-most in NFL history.
What’s a season without the Jets achieving a record no one will remember?
Joseph will replace Greg Zuerlein, who hurt his back after just recovering from a knee injury. Riley Patterson, Spencer Shrader and Anders Carlson also kicked for the Jets this season.
The revolving door of kickers wasn’t expected by the Jets.
“When you think about how this roster was built to start this season, you would’ve definitely said that Greg (Zuerlein) would’ve been one of the strengths, and he’d been a guy that we leaned on in a lot of ways, won us a lot of games here, and unfortunately, his health just didn’t cooperate,” said interim coach Jeff Ulbrich in the same report.
The 37-year-old former All-Pro First Team member only suited up for eight games this season.
With the injuries, the firing of Robert Saleh, and rumored internal strife, the possible exit of Rodgers could very well be the final nail in the coffin of what has been another forgettable season for the hard-luck Jets.
