What Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury said about interviewing for head coaching positions

Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is a wanted man. It’s nothing new for Kingsbury, but a bit of a surprise considering his firing from the Arizona Cardinals after the 2022 season.

In 2023, Kingsbury worked as an analyst at USC before returning to the NFL with the Commanders. At USC, Kingsbury worked for good friend Lincoln Riley and helped mentor 2024 No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams.

As Dan Quinn’s new offensive coordinator for Washington, Kingsbury was tasked with developing No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels. Daniels would enjoy the finest rookie campaign for a quarterback in NFL history, breaking numerous NFL and team records and helping lead the Commanders to 12 wins.

Rightfully, Kingsbury is receiving attention from various teams looking for a new head coach. The Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints both reportedly want to speak to Kingsbury about their vacancy. Chicago would be an interesting situation for Kingsbury with Caleb Williams in place.

Kingsbury was recently asked if he wanted to be a head coach again.

“Yeah, I’m sure at some point,” Kingsbury said. “Yeah, at some point.”

Now that the regular season is over and we know which teams need a coach, reporters asked Kingsbury if he had spoken with interested teams.

“Yeah, I haven’t had any discussions,” Kingsbury said Thursday. “Coaches, we pay representation to handle all that and so they’ve handled all that. It’s just been all Tampa Bay.”

That’s the right answer, and it’s also a non-answer. What did you expect him to say? Kingsbury has made it clear he’s happy in Washington. He’s also still being paid by the Cardinals, too. He’s in no rush to take a job just to be a head coach again. Kingsbury is in the perfect position. He can sit out this cycle and see what’s open one year from now. If Washington’s offense continues its current trajectory, he’ll be even more wanted in 2026.

Before Kingsbury finished his media session, reporters tried to get one more answer.

“I’m not going to touch on that,” Kingsbury responded when asked if he plans on taking interviews. “Yeah, just focusing on Tampa.”

Kingsbury can immediately begin taking interviews if the Commanders lose on Sunday to Tampa Bay in the NFC wild-card round. If Washington wins, those interviews will have to wait.

We’re guessing that Kingsbury is ok waiting — for a while.
