The Philadelphia Phillies (65-43) did what they set out to do at the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline. They added around the edges of the roster, shoring up the holes that were most prevalent.

In the latest edition of MLB.com’s weekly power rankings, the Phillies still claimed the top spot, even after being swept by the New York Yankees (65-45). Here is what Will Leitch had to say about the Phillies:

“This is what you want your team to do at the Deadline when it’s loaded with veterans and focused solely on winning the World Series: Attack its weaknesses (bullpen), be willing to overpay a little to do so, and otherwise, get out of the way. The Phillies have just one goal, and the Deadline got them a little closer to do it. What more can you ask?”

This may not go very far in easing fans’ minds, as many were calling for the Phillies to do much more at this year’s trade deadline. Even in the final hours, many were clamoring for Dave Dombrowski and associates to pull the trigger on getting Luis Robert Jr. in red pinstripes. But Dombrowski never budged.

The Phillies added two relievers, while also subtracting two relievers, and brought in an everyday left fielder. Those were the goals that Dombrowski set out to accomplish, and those were the goals that he did accomplish. You can never say that he doesn’t finish what he has set out to do.

Even in the midst of weeks-long slump, culminating in being swept by the Yankees, the Phillies have not lost their spot atop the mountain. That in and of itself is evidence of just how deep the Phillies roster is this season, and how everyone is well aware that this slump will come to an end. For the fans’ sake, hopefully soon.
