Manager reacts after signing ‘terrific’ player from Wrexham, makes ‘excellent’ prediction

Wrexham have been busy striking incoming deals this summer but some players have been moved on – including midfielder Jordan Davies.

Phil Parkinson simply had to bolster the Wrexham squad after back-to-back promotions up to League One.

The big kick off against Wycombe Wanderers is now looming and Wrexham have re-tooled in an effort to continue progression.

Arthur Okonkwo’s permanent deal was the big signing of the summer but the rest of the business has been impressive.

League One know-how has been added in Callum Burton, Dan Scarr and George Dobson whilst younger talents Lewis Brunt and Sebastian Revan have joined too.

Parkinson can be very happy with his business so far, freshening up the squad with some difficult exits confirmed over the course of the summer.

Jordan Davies leaves Wrexham

Sadly, not everybody can stick around for the full Wrexham journey.

The likes of Ben Tozer, Aaron Hayden and Jordan Tunnicliffe were all let go this summer, sparking defensive additions.

Wrexham have to make tough decisions on this journey and Jordan Davies will not be involved in the League One season.

Davies has been the subject of interest from Grimsby Town of late.

Boss David Artell confirmed his interest in a deal last weekend with Davies down the pecking order.

Grimsby have now secured the deal, taking Davies on loan for the 2024-25 season in time for him to make his debut against Fleetwood Town.

Artell has now given his reaction to the move whilst speaking to Grimsby’s official website.

Artell is ‘delighted’ to have signed Davies and believes the midfielder is a truly ‘terrific’ player, backing him to be an excellent signing for the club.

The Grimsby boss admitted that this has been a lengthy pursuit having first targeted Davies at the end of last season.

Artell highlighted strong pre-season displays from Davies and is ecstatic to have beaten other clubs to his signature.

“I’m delighted we have been able to bring Jordan to Grimsby Town. He’s a terrific player and we believe he’ll be an excellent acquisition for us,” said Artell. “We originally spoke to Phil (Parkinson) about Jordan towards the end of last season and he’s been someone we have targeted since then.”

“He’s recently been on tour with Wrexham over in America and scored three in four games. He knows where the goal is so we’re looking forward to having those attributes in the team. We’re really pleased we have been able to attract Jordan to the Club and beat off a lot of competition for his signature,” he added.

Has Davies played his final game for Wrexham?

Leaving Wrexham – even on loan for the season – won’t have been an easy decision for Davies.

Davies hails from Wrexham, came up in the club’s youth ranks and returned to the club in 2020 after leaving Brighton and Hove Albion.

Davies has Wrexham so close to his heart and fans won’t forget his 21-goal campaign in the 2021-22 season.

The 25-year-old simply needs to play games though and that prospect just doesn’t look strong now Wrexham are in League One.

This project under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds is enthralling but also means that some players will be left behind as the club’s march continues.

Davies signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal in January 2022, meaning his contract is due to expire next summer – unless there has been a secret deal agreed or an option that can be activated.

Davies will now spend the final year of his deal at Grimsby and he may well have played his final game for Wrexham – but he will always be welcome back at the STōK Cae Ras.
