The Toronto Maple Leafs made headlines thanks to their undisputable 6-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night, their third win of the season and the biggest to date.
All members of the Core Four scored or assisted a goal, including new team captain Auston Matthews, but it was head coach Craig Berube’s decision to scratch veteran Max Pacioretty that caught many off guard.
The veteran had appeared in all three prior regular-season games scoring one goal in a win over the New Jersey Devils.
The move came as a surprise given Pacioretty’s role on the team, but Berube stood by his choice following the game.
“We have extra players. Not everybody can play every day,” Berube said, via Sportsnet’s Luke Fox. “That’s the bottom line. He’s been fine when he’s played. But I got to make decisions as a coach, and I’m going to make those decisions, what I think is best for the team.”
Pacioretty, who signed with the Leafs this offseason after a tough year with the Washington Capitals, has been slowly working his way back to form.
After dealing with injuries during the last stage of his career, Pacioretty managed just 4 goals in 47 games last season. However, the forward’s promising preseason and a nice start to the regular season have him looking like a solid depth piece.
The Leafs didn’t miss a beat without Pacioretty on their lineup on Wednesday, which backs up Berube’s decision to scratch the veteran.
Auston Matthews ended his early-season goal drought with a standout performance, scoring once and adding two assists. Bobby McMann added two goals, and William Nylander, John Tavares, and Max Domi all contributed to the scoring sheet.
Berube emphasized the importance of making the right decisions for the team’s overall success instead of focusing on particular players. He also issued a promising update for Pacioretty’s chances at returning to the lineup soon.
“It’s about managing the roster and keeping everyone fresh, Berube said. “He’ll get his chance again.”
The Leafs have a tough matchup ahead as they will face the President Trophy winners New York Rangers on Saturday.
