The Mets’ focus will surely be on landing Pete Alonso. However, if he leaves they could add another elite arm to their rotation. Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer proposed this trade that brings Minnesota Twins ace Pablo López to the Mets:
The Mets would be trading their No. 2 and No. 3 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. Williams and Gilbert are both in Triple-A and could make their debuts this season. The Mets would be losing two of their young stars, but López will not be a free agent until after the 2027 season. He signed a four-year, $73.5 million deal in 2024. He was an All-Star in 2023 with a 3.66 ERA.
He made 32 starts in each of the last three seasons. Last season he had a 4.08 ERA with 198 strikeouts. He would be a great addition to the Mets to lead the rotation. López, Manaea, Holmes and Montas would be a strong group to lead the Mets’ rotation in 2025. López also gives the Mets some insurance in case the experiment of making Holmes a starter again fails.
“López fits the bill in general, and one can imagine him working well with Mets pitching coach Jeremy Hefner,” wrote Rymer. “Mets hurlers leaned heavily on the sweeper under him this year, and López’s own sweeper is in need of repair after a down year.”
