Rugby league runs through Mitch Moses’ blood. The nephew of Tigers legend Benny Elias, Moses played his junior football in the Balmain competition for Holy Cross Rhinos and Carlingford Cougars before joining the Eels’ Harold Matthews Squad in 2010.
He was integral to the team that played in a Grand Final against a Penrith side captained by current teammate Bryce Cartwright, before tasting premiership success two years later with the Tigers’ SG Ball team where he formed a formidable halves combination with close friend Luke Brooks.
Moses was named the SG Ball Cup Player of the Year in 2012 and represented Australian Schoolboys in the same year – a team that featured former Eels captain Clint Gutherson. Moses ended 2012 with an inclusion in the New South Wales Blues Origin Pathways Camp, before representing the Tiger’s NYC team in 2013 and 2014.
An illustrious NRL career
Rugby league fans were first exposed to Moses in the inaugural Auckland Nines competition in 2014, but had to wait until Round 17 to see him make his NRL debut at fullback at Leichhardt Oval against Penrith. He spent his first six games in the No.1 jumper, but it wasn’t long before his combination with Brooks in the halves flourished, and he quickly became one of the club’s star players.
After 67 appearances for the Tigers, including being named their Player of the Year in 2016, Moses’ return to his junior club, the Parramatta Eels in 2017 marked the start of another chapter in his career.
He played a pivotal role in guiding the team into the top four and the Club’s first Finals appearance since 2009. He earned his first international representative honours and leadership role as the vice-captain of Lebanon in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, where he was named at five-eighth in the Team of the Tournament.
In 2019, Moses was instrumental in a memorable match at the new Western Sydney Stadium, where he became the first player to score a try, conversion, and field goal in the venue’s inaugural NRL match. This set the tone for a standout season where he finished with the most try assists in the competition and helped lead Parramatta to a historic Finals victory over the Broncos.
He helped guide the Club to consecutive Finals appearances in 2020 and 2021 and reaped the rewards as he made his State of Origin debut for the Blues in Game III. The run of Finals appearances continued in 2022 as he played an influential role in taking the Club a step further into the Grand Final.
It was a year of milestones for Moses in 2023, as he played his 200th NRL game in Round 2 as well as his 150th game for Parramatta in Round 24, while adding another Origin Blues appearance under his belt.
While 2024 was a year disrupted by injury for the halfback, Moses was a key factor in the Blues’ comeback victory over the Maroons, stepping into Game II with a Man of the Match performance, before he sealed the deal in Game III with the final Series-clenching try. He capped off the season with a debut in the Green and Gold, lifting up the Pacific Championships trophy on home soil at CommBank Stadium.
