The Montreal Canadiens picked up a point on Wednesday night, but unfortunately, they gave up a history making play to the Seattle Kraken in the process as they fell in incredibly dramatic fashion.
The Montreal Canadiens find themselves surprisingly in a Wild Card race in the Eastern Conference, and on Wednesday night against the Seattle Kraken, they had a prime opportunity to pick up two key points.
With the game heading to overtime, there was still everything to play for in Montreal, but in the blink of an eye, the game was over, with Seattle making NHL history in the process.
After the puck drop, Seattle’s Brandon Montour took just four seconds to bury the overtime winner, making it not only the quickest OT goal in NHL history, but also the quickest goal ever scored to begin a period in league history.
With Montreal picking up a losers point on the night, they find themselves just one point behind the Columbus Blue Jackets for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, and with their young talent still thriving, there’s no doubting that they’re still in the race.
Unfortunately however, this was a major blown opportunity that could have pulled them equal with Columbus in the standings, but simply put, they never stood a chance after Montour got a lucky bounce and pulled away for the winner.
Ultimately, this was a play they likely should have stopped, but at the end of a long road trip, they fought hard to pick up a point, and if they can keep up this level of play over the final month of the season, they’ll no doubt remain in Stanley Cup Playoffs contention the whole way.
