Though the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly want to bring back quarterback Justin Fields next season, all signs point to the 26-year-old signal-caller seeing how much interest he gets in free agency. With the NFL’s legal tampering window opening in just under two days, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported on Saturday that Fields is expected to “test the market,” meaning he’d be able to speak with teams other than the Steelers from 9 a.m. ET on March 10 until 12:59 p.m. ET on March 12. Field seemingly helped his stock with how he performed in Pittsburgh this season, passing for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns while adding another 289 yards and five touchdowns on the ground while leading the Steelers to a 4-2 record as the starter. Wilson went 6-6 after taking over, including a 28-14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the wild-card round of the playoffs. Multiple reports indicate Fields is Pittsburgh priority over Wilson, who will likely be searching for a new team in free agency. New York, meanwhile, is searching for a replacement for future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers after cutting ties with him once the season ended. The Jets haven’t had a single starting quarterback last longer than three seasons since the Chad Pennington era 2002-2007. If Fields lands in New York, the Jets could use their No. 7 overall pick in next month’s draft on an offensive playmaker instead of a QB, which likely is a much more appealing option for first-year head coach Aaron Glenn than breaking in a rookie quarterback.
