Pettersson Talks Trade Buzz After Being Called Out by Canucks

Vancouver Canucks’ general manager Patrik Allvin told Sportsnet last week that Elias Pettersson needs to understand that after signing a monster contract extension to stay with the team, the hard part is only just getting started. Noting that the 26-year-old center hasn’t “really accomplished anything,” his $92.8-million contract extension is where the work begins, not ends. Since those comments, trade rumors have run rampant. Now, Pettersson is finally speaking.

It’s not easy being essentially called out by the GM. For Pettersson, who has a reputation of struggling a bit when the pressure mounts, it’s even more difficult. But, that’s part of the responsibility of having a massive contract on a team in a market where production and winning matter. Pettersson understands he needs to be better.

“I know I can do better,” Pettersson said. “I will be the first one to say it, and I never think things will get easier.

Regarding the trade chatter that has surfaced this season and the call-out by his GM, Pettersson added, “I haven’t met them yet. But, I mean, it doesn’t matter what people say. I know what I can do, and that’s what I’m focussing on doing.”

What Does Pettersson Think of the Trade Talk?

Allvin was asked point blank if there was talk that Pettersson might be moved. His response wasn’t a ringing endorsement of the superstar. Allvin noted, “…anything is possible.” That led to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reporting Saturday that the Canucks are “definitely looking at the market” on both Pettersson and teammate J.T. Miller.

Pettersson has heard the rumors. He knows the chatter and the speculation surrounding him.

“I’m aware of it, I’ve heard it,” Pettersson said. He noted there isn’t much he can do to stop it, especially while he’s out injured. “But then it’s like, can I control it? No. So that’s where I’m at. I’m trying not to think about it. But I’m sure it will go away if I play better and if we win.”
