The Chicago Cubs are reportedly “surprised” after a recent decision involving a $177 million, 2-time All-Star player. This player is none other than shortstop Dansby Swanson, who signed a seven-year, $177 million contract with the Cubs in 2022. Dansby Swanson’s Struggles and the Cubs’ Surprise

Dansby Swanson, the Chicago Cubs’ shortstop, signed a massive seven-year, $177 million deal in December 2022, bringing high expectations to Wrigley Field. As a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner, Swanson was supposed to be a cornerstone player for the Cubs’ rebuild and a key contributor on both offense and defense. However, his 2024 season was met with significant disappointment, particularly due to a steep decline in his offensive production.

After hitting 25 home runs with an .800+ OPS in 2022 and maintaining strong offensive numbers in 2023, Swanson struggled in 2024. His OPS dropped to .701, and he managed only 16 home runs—the lowest in a full season since 2018. His batting average hovered around .240, and his strikeout rate increased. These numbers raised concerns among Cubs fans and management about whether he could live up to his contract.

Reports suggest that the Cubs were “surprised” by Swanson’s struggles, especially given his track record of steady production. Chicago had hoped that his offensive consistency, paired with elite defense, would make him a franchise cornerstone. While his glove remained elite—he led all MLB shortstops in Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) and Outs Above Average (OAA) in 2024—his offensive regression was alarming.

One major factor in Swanson’s struggles was injury. In May, he suffered a knee sprain, which significantly affected his first-half numbers. Before the All-Star break, he posted a weak .632 OPS. However, as he regained his health, he showed signs of improvement, finishing the second half with a much stronger .795 OPS. Despite these improvements, his overall numbers were still below expectations.

In early October, it was revealed that Swanson had played through a core injury for much of the season. He underwent surgery in the offseason but is expected to be fully healthy for 2025. This revelation helps explain some of his struggles, though it does not entirely absolve concerns about his declining offensive output.

Despite the frustrating offensive numbers, Swanson’s defense remained among the best in the league. He was nominated as a Gold Glove finalist and was a major reason why the Cubs’ infield defense ranked among the best in MLB. His leadership and experience also played a crucial role in the clubhouse, making him a valuable presence beyond his on-field performance.

Looking ahead, the Cubs are hoping for a bounce-back season from Swanson in 2025. His late-season improvement, combined with a return to full health, suggests he could regain his form. However, if his offensive decline continues, questions about the long-term value of his contract will only grow louder.

Swanson’s struggles highlight the unpredictability of long-term contracts in baseball. While his elite defense ensures he remains a valuable player, the Cubs will need more from him at the plate if they hope to compete in a tough National League Central division. The 2025 season will be crucial in determining whether Swanson can return to form or if his offensive decline is a sign of long-term regression.
