Tottenham have now been told to make an expensive transfer move to combat a decision Arsenal made.
Spurs are not as close to the Gunners as they would ideally like to be right now, with Mikel Arteta’s side challenging for the Premier League title in successive seasons, while Ange Postecoglou is currently focused on getting Tottenham back into the UEFA Champions League.
Now, Tottenham have been told to make one major signing in a bid to bridge the gap on Arsenal…
Tottenham told to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili after Arsenal decision
Darren Ambrose has now told Tottenham to sign Valencia No.25 Giorgi Mamardashvili – despite the fact Guglielmo Vicario is the current No.1 at Spurs.
When asked who should sign the Georgia international this summer, the 40-year-old, who supports Tottenham, told talkSPORT at 4:30pm on Sunday: “I am going to say it – Spurs. They have Vicario, but there were a few flaws in Vicario, and I think people targeted that in terms of coming for crosses.
“He wasn’t getting a lot of support from the officials, but people were targeting his weakness of coming for crosses. So, look, maybe, and we have seen with Arsenal with the two goalkeepers situation, sometimes that works.”
As Ambrose references, Arteta opted to spend £30m on David Raya, despite Aaron Ramsdale earning a spot in the Premier League PFA Team of the Year for the 2022/23 campaign.
The Spain international has since replaced the England international, although the bold decision was proven right as Raya lifted the Golden Glove with 16 Premier League clean sheets last season.
To compare that to the situation at Tottenham, Postecoglou only has the 36-year-old Fraser Forster behind Vicario, as well as the untested Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman.
Spurs are looking for a new glovesman
Postecoglou may be on the same page as Ambrose, as Eldesmarque in Spain claim that Tottenham want to sign Espanyol No.1 Joan Garcia this summer, and actually lead the race for his signature in a £21m deal.
Interestingly, the Spaniard is said to be tempted by the chance to join Spurs – according to AS.
Therefore, Postecoglou may actually be thinking of signing a new goalkeeper this summer, albeit one less expensive than the £35m-rated Mamardashvili.
