The New York Yankees continue to shape up their roster in the wake of losing free-agent slugger Juan Soto.
After adding starting pitcher Max Fried, and then trading for former MVP Cody Bellinger and closer Devin Williams, the Yankees front office concluded the week before the holiday break by dealing catcher Jose Trevino to the Cincinnati Reds.
revino led all catchers with 21 Defensive Runs Saved that season. He earned a trip to the All-Star Game that season and took home a Gold Glove as well.
It was also his best season at the plate that year. In a career-high 115 games, slashing .248/.283/.388 with a career=high 11 home runs. Trevino led all catchers with 21 Defensive Runs Saved that season, earning an All-Star selection and a Gold Glove in the process.
Trevino is the second major league player the Yankees have dealt this offseason. They sent fan-favorite Nestor Cortes to the Milwaukee Brewers to acquire Williams.
In exchange for the former All-Star catcher, the Yankees received reliever Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported.
Trevino was projected to earn over $3.5 million next year through arbitration and the Yankees have younger catchers on the roster they want to play.
Cruz has a 4.52 ERA over three seasons in the big leagues. Jackson is a veteran defensive backstop who hit .122 for the Tampa Bay Rays last season.
Trevino, a 2022 All-Star, became redundant as Austin Wells has taken over the starting catching duties and the Yankees’ depth in the minors. J.C Escarra is on the 40-man roster after posting a .930 OPS in 51 games.
The Yankees acquired him from the Texas Rangers shortly before Opening Day 2022 in a deal that sent reliever Albert Abreu to Arlington. Trevino developed into a solid glove-first catcher.
