The New York Yankees struck out on getting Christian Walker but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a backup plan.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Yankees are showing “strong interest” in Paul Goldschmidt but there are also several other teams going after him. The Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, Washington Nationals, and New York Mets are trying to land the former MVP.
He’s a seven-time MLB All-Star and won the National League MVP in 2022.

Goldschmidt may not be as good as he used to be but he can still very much get the job. Even at 37, he finished the 2024 season with 22 home runs and 65 RBIs off a .245 batting average.
He’s been with the St. Louis Cardinals for the last six seasons and has hit 20+ home runs in five of them. Before that, he spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Yankees are also looking at Carlos Santana and appear to be committed to adding more bats after losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets. The Yankees made a strong offer to bring Soto back but ultimately, he chose to sign with the Mets on a 15-year $765 million contract, the biggest in sports history.
The Yankees are all-in on trying to win a World Series after coming within three games of winning it all this past season. They lost in five games to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are ready to run it back next season.
Despite the winter meetings being over, the stove is still hot in free agency. We’ll see if the Yankees can sell Goldschmidt on the Bronx for the next few seasons.
