Yankees, Mets, Red Sox Reportedly Battling For $170 Million Star Free Agent

Posted on December 17, 2024 by admin

The New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and New York Mets are no strangers to engaging in grueling free-agency bidding wars with each other. These teams were some of the biggest suitors in the Juan Soto sweepstakes, which ultimately resulted in Soto choosing the Mets.

Now, these four teams are reportedly engaging in another bidding war, this time joined by the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers as well.

Astros infielder Alex Bregman is a free agent and Jon Heyman of the New York Post projects him to sign a $170 million deal this winter. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand recently reported that the six teams listed above are all realistic players in the sweepstakes for the Astros infielder.

“The Yankees are also believed to have interest in both players (Bregman and Nolan Arenado), either of whom would take over at third base, shifting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second. Other clubs in on Bregman to varying degrees include the Red Sox, Mets, Tigers, and Blue Jays,” Feinsand wrote.

The Bregman sweepstakes is quite an intriguing one to predict. Any of these teams could afford to pay him the $170 million or $200 million that he’s asking. It would just depend on which teams feel like he’s truly worth that investment.

The Mets, Astros, and Red Sox are also contenders for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado. Arenado would be much cheaper and a lot less risky than Bregman.

As for the Yankees, Bregman seems to be the top option at the hot corner. The Bronx Bombers should likely be seen as the favorites to land Bregman this winter in a move that nobody would have seen coming a few seasons ago.
