‘Confusing to me’: Ange Postecoglou bristles at reaction to controversial post-match interview

Posted on September 18, 2024 by admin

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou defended his comments Ange Postecoglou in a second year at a club.

Following the 1-0 loss to their arch-rivals in the North London Derby, the former Celtic boss corrected a reporter during a post-match interview, telling her he “always wins” in his second year at a club as opposed to “normally” winning, which is how the reporter phrased it.

The Australian manager’s record speaks for itself but that did not stop a wave of criticism over the remarks, which some commentators accused Postecoglou of boasting of his achievements.

Ahead of the Spurs’ clash against Coventry in the third round of the League Cup on Thursday morning (5am AEST), Postecoglou addressed the reaction to the interview.

“It is amazing, isn’t it? I just stated a fact and it seems like am I supposed to just lie or just say it never happened?” Postecoglou said. “It is confusing to me that people are making a big deal out of something – surely I am supposed to answer something that is true?

“Like if I don’t win in the second year this year, and I come out next year and say, ‘well I always win in it’… well no, actually it is not true. “But I have just said something that is true and it seems like it has upset a lot of people for some reason.”

In relation to claims he was big-noting himself, Postecolgou said: “Do you really think it’s me sort of boasting? “How am I supposed to answer something that is true? Is it to say, ‘well, actually, it wasn’t that important. They were easy competitions, and they don’t mean anything’?
