Bobby Clark posted a black-and-white photo on Instagram amid reports linking him with Newcastle United.
One of Mike Ashley’s final acts as Toon owner saw the Magpies sell the talent to Liverpool for £1.5million. Clark, son of former Newcastle midfielder Lee, was arguably Benton’s brightest prospect but left for pastures new – with the club seemingly going nowhere.
Just two months later, the Magpies, backed by new-found Saudi Arabian riches, would become the most ambitious club on the planet. While still embroiled in a relegation battle, the fresh ownership announced plans to become a Champions League powerhouse.
Big-money signings have arrived but Newcastle also prioritised youth development following the takeover. A previously neglected area on Tyneside, the Magpies hope to develop talent for the first team and, at the same time, sell youngsters to alleviate FFP/PSR concerns.
Clark has since gone on to turn heads at Liverpool – but is desperate for regular football. The now 19-year-old featured 12 times for the Reds last season, scoring once in the Europa League.
Several Championship clubs have been placed on high alert since noises emerged about the midfielder’s future. Bristol City, Portsmouth, and Norwich City are interested but neither could afford Liverpool’s demands.
The Athletic claim Red Bull Salzburg are front-runners to sign Clark for around £12million. However, The Chronicle claim Newcastle were offered the chance to re-sign the youngster – an option they declined.
NewcastleWorld understands there was also no sell-on fee inserted into his sale to Liverpool three years ago. Reds fans are convinced Clark is leaving given the recent cryptic post on his Instagram.
