Tiger Woods sets new Masters record and sends firm message to rivals – ‘I’m right there’

Tiger Woods has set a new record for the most consecutive cuts made at the Masters after a marathon Friday for the five-time champion.

The 48-year-old had to play 23 holes on the second day at Augusta National but ensured he would be back at the weekend for a record 24th consecutive time.

Woods was unable to complete his first round on Thursday due to the stormy weather in Georgia which initially delayed the start of play.

He was level par through 13 holes when he resumed his second round in calmer conditions early on Friday morning

Woods bogeyed the 14th and eventually shot a one-over 73 before a quick turnaround to begin round two.

He comfortably made the cut, going round level par to remain +1 to be seven shots off three fellow Americans at the top of the leaderboard.

He became the first player to make 24 consecutive cuts at the Masters, surpassing the great Gary Player and Fred Couples who shared the previous record of 23 with Woods.

His streak of cuts began in 1997 when many of this week’s field hadn’t even been born.

The last of Woods’ five Masters triumphs came in memorable style in 2019.

Injuries have largely restricted his appearances in recent years and Augusta is only the second tournament he has entered in 2024.

World No 1 Scottie Scheffler leads the way on six under alongside Max Homa and Bryan Dechambeau.

But Woods insists he still has a chance after notching another incredible record.

He told Sky Sports: “Well it’s consistency. You can’t win a golf tournament unless you’re here on the weekend.

“I’ve been able to make this cut for a number of years now in a row and I have a chance going into the weekend.

“I’m looking forward to it and as of right now, anyone who makes the cut has a chance. I’m right there.”

He added: “I don’t know if they’re all going to finish today, but I’m done.
